I wouldn’t worry about the Server List at all if you know which two apps you’re going to be receiving from. It’s really intended for more complex cases where you want the selection to be made within QC.

If you delete it, you can manually put the names of the applications you’ll be receiving from in the App Name input for the Syphon Client patches, then name the files so you know which is which.

The Server List updates as servers come and go. The index is simply a position in the list of currently available servers. That patch is in a folder called “Examples”, not “Useful” 😉

Trev, you have not installed the Quartz Composer plugin. Check the instructions in the Read Me.

Writing in all capitals and red in an email is a pretty good way to piss anyone off. Sending an email that’s a duplicate of a forum post the recipient is going to answer anyway is also a pretty good way. We do this stuff for you for free, so be kind please.

From your all-caps email it’s hard to guess what the slowdown is. As I mentioned, I can capture HD frames at 30 fps from GrandVJ, even on a 2006 iMac.

The most likely cause is the disk not being able to keep up. This is quite likely if you are playing from and recording to the same disk. One thing to try would be recording to an external disk connected by FireWire (not USB).

Try a setup where the resolution is something reasonably small right through (the resolution in GrandVJ and Syphon Recorder, and the resolution of the clip you are triggering) – say 640×480 – and see what framerate you can achieve. If that works then try incrementally bigger frame sizes until you discover the limit.

No. This feature has been requested a few times, but won’t be coming any time soon. The issue if you want to track it or add any comments on how you’d like to use it is at http://code.google.com/p/syphon-framework/issues/detail?id=9

The old QC download is at

    http://syphon.v002.info/downloads/old-public-beta-1/Syphon%20for%20Quartz%20Composer.dmg

Take only the qcFX for VDMX 7 from that, but continue to use the current Syphon QCPlugIn.

If you build from the current source on the google code project it should work with Max 6. We’ll get a new release out as soon as we can.

There does seem to be an issue with playing mp4 files – let us know if you can/can’t get it to work…

We’re unable to provide support for made-up words that people have written wikipedia articles about. Syphon is a pseudo-frameserver with an ever-growing list of supported apps – if that’s of use to you, see my post above.

I’m not entirely sure what the question is…

To integrate Syphon in your own applications, use Syphon.framework from the Syphon SDK

the problem is that a lot of realtime software like jitter etc.. don’t have quality renderings making it very difficult to have a Professional looking product at the end of the day… but I understand that some things just require to much time.

It’s not a matter of time – using Syphon for this sort of thing isn’t necessary – just about every environment lets you dump a still image out at whatever dimensions/resolution you want, and you can easily assemble a sequence of images into a movie. Lots of environments will let you output a movie directly.

If you’re absolutely determined to bring Syphon Recorder into the process, I would set up a patch where you draw a frame in Jitter or wherever, emit a midi signal and use MidiStroke to translate it to the key combo to capture a snapshot in Syphon Recorder, draw your next frame, repeat until you’re done.

Hi – looks interesting! Not sure it’s something we’d do ourselves (enough other projects going on), but would be very interested if anyone has a go at it.

Sorry we haven’t a solution – I feel your pain.

We will think about ways of avoiding this situation in a future update – perhaps recording short segments then joining them when recording finishes.
