I want to record desktop screen like you can with Quicktime using Syphon? I have a movie playing to the desktop streaming into a web browser from the internet at full screen size and goes for 60 minutes want to record.
July 26, 2014 at 10:47 am #58715vadeKeymasterUse our Quartz Composer screen capture to a syphon server? Use Syphoner?
There are plenty of options.
July 26, 2014 at 6:46 pm #58717usefuldesign.auParticipantThanks Vade
Syphoner is a new one for me 🙂 DLing now. How does one do screen capture in QC from a different application like Chrome? I know how to use Syphon in QC to pipe an image or a QC Viewer window but not external app windows.
July 27, 2014 at 8:11 am #58718bangnoiseKeymasterIf you just want to record a movie of the desktop, why use Syphon at all? QuickTime Player does screen recording.
December 3, 2014 at 3:38 pm #58859HDLParticipantHello, I’ve also been having trouble finding a good solution for this.
QuickTime does not record lossless RGB video.
ScreenFlow has the same problem, albeit to a far lesser extent. It’s not free and its export options all have flaws.
There’s CamTwist + Syphon Recorder, but CT is a performance hog at times.
SyphonInject + Syphon Recorder may also cause performance issues based on the source.
v002 Screen Capture doesn’t seem to work on Yosemite.
Desktop to Syphon isn’t behaving correctly when I set my origins and capture resolution.
Syphoner is not free and it’s broken on Yosemite.
ffmpeg has a frame rate bug with AV Foundation capture.High performance lossless RGB recording on OS X seems to be really hard to come by.
December 4, 2014 at 2:32 pm #58860vadeKeymasterv002 Screen Capture 2.0 (on our https://github.com/v002/v002-Media-Tools/ repository) works with Yosemite. I just tested it and made a RGB 4444 Pro Res recording via Quartz Composer -> Syphon Recorder at 60fps.
We’ve been lax with updating official releases of plugins because of the number of bugs and unfixed issues in QC, so we aren’t putting a lot of dev and personal time in to it. Sorry about the confusion.
December 4, 2014 at 6:09 pm #58863HDLParticipantI downloaded 2.0.2 from the main site (there are no builds on the GitHub). What I see is different from that screen shot.

I don’t have that Syphon Server block either.
December 5, 2014 at 10:17 am #58867vadeKeymasterlike i said its only on github. you have to build. we aren’t packaging.
Install the Syphon QC Plugin.
December 9, 2014 at 12:47 pm #58870HDLParticipantI tried building it in Xcode 6.1.1, but the ARC conversion and build fails.

December 10, 2014 at 10:51 am #58872bangnoiseKeymasterI’ve updated the project, pull and try again.
December 10, 2014 at 11:33 am #58873HDLParticipantWorks perfectly now, thanks.
December 10, 2014 at 12:20 pm #58874HDLParticipantAfter a bit of testing I did find an issue. While screen capture itself works great, the colors are inaccurate:

I’m not sure if the v002 plugin is causing it or Quartz Composer. The capture is very noticeably brighter than the source.
Edit: Upon closer inspection it also seems there is some very slight blurring as well.

December 11, 2014 at 10:48 am #58877December 12, 2014 at 7:07 am #58882vadeKeymasterPull from the repo, I’ve updated the code and verified in QC at least the color is fixed (via digital color meter).
Thanks for the report and good eyes!
December 12, 2014 at 9:19 am #58883HDLParticipantThat was fast, thanks! OS X has so few accurate recording options so this really helps.
Could you also look into this when you have time? http://v002.info/forums/topic/syphon-recorder-fps-issue/
Between this and ffmpeg’s screen capture, smooth FPS seems to be the last real problem plaguing lossless recording on OS X.
December 13, 2014 at 9:05 am #58887bangnoiseKeymasterPlease don’t post duplicate requests for attention.
If you just want to do screen capture then there are various commercial products available, and they provide customer support at the level you seem to require.
